We talk about a lot of different topics in Seneca Hue, but when you get down to it, the message is always the same. Teams are stronger when people can bring their whole selves to work. When we feel validated, and supported by our coworkers and leaders, we're happier, we work better, and we become better contributors to our organization. A lot goes into our whole self, but a big factor is our belief system. That's true whether we're guided by organized religion, or personal spirituality, by non-spiritual beliefs and customs, or most often, by a mix of all of these. I felt the importance of that acceptance very recently, as I went through the process of converting to Islam. I wasn't nervous talking about my journey at work, I knew I was lucky to work in a very welcoming place. But I was surprised by the depth of the response I got. Everyone I worked with, even clients, were happy to support me. When I brought up that I was tired from fasting, or mentioned celebrations I was participating in, I got validation in my faith, and in my being. I felt like I began my journey to feel more accepted by God. And then I felt that because I'm doing this, I was being accepted by everybody. People showed me that though we didn't share faith, we shared the same values. Just the simple fact that people acknowledge my holidays felt special, that they were interested and not awkward. My journey was extremely personal and vulnerable. But being able to share that part of myself deepened my connection to the people I've worked with. It helped me grow my acceptance of myself, and I remain grateful for that. In this module, we're going to talk about how religion and belief informs the way people respond to the world around them. This includes what they might eat, what they might wear, and even where an individual's comfort zone lies. We're not taking you to church or teaching you how to pray, or anything like that. Instead, we want to explore important questions and information, that will help us create the best workplace for our teams, and ourselves. How can we stay true to our values and respect those of others? How can we create a community that's inclusive? How can we, as business leaders, create an environment in which people of all faiths and beliefs have the same opportunities for success? And hopefully, we can take an opportunity to introspect on our own beliefs, and how they impact the way we come to work, and collaborate with others. All this is important and not just for our personal growth, but for the growth of the workplace. When people are given room to live their full lives within an organization, they do better work. I certainly know that I have.
